Gartner Inc., an American research firm that delivers technology research to global technology business leaders, announced on Thursday that the total sale of smartphones in the 2nd quarter of this year was about 344 million units. Thus, an increase of about 4.3% was recorded as compared to the same period in the last year.
However, out of the leading 10 smartphone vendors, only 5 showed increase in their sales. One of these is the South Korean Samsung and the rest four are Chinese namely Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and BBK Communication Equipment Corp. Ltd. Also it is interesting to know that the mobile phone brand, Oppo Vivo is owned by BBK Communication Equipment Corp. Ltd.
Samsung Corp. had about 10% more market share than Apple Inc. in the 2nd quarter of 2016 as the sales of Apple declined by about 7.7%. In China and Asia-Pacific regions Apple faced a sales decline of 26% which is its largest scale decline in this the foresaid quarter. Besides that, the company also faced sales decline in North America and Western Europe.
Mr. Anshul Gupta, a research director at Gartner, reported “Demand for premium smartphones slowed in the second quarter of 2016 as consumers wait for new hardware launches in the second half of the year.”
In the 2nd quarter of present year, out of the leading 5 smartphone sellers, OPPO Electronics Corp. showed the highest growth of 129% in its sales.
Moreover, the overall sales of smartphones in the said quarter was made worse as the sale of feature phones declined by 14%.
Besides Japan, almost all of the large markets faced a slacking demand of phones which resulted in a sales decline of about 4.9%. Meanwhile, Gartner announced, all maturing areas except Latin America witnessed growth in goods sales which resulted in rise in sales of mobile phones by 9.9%.
